Walking through the historical old town of Teguise takes us back centuries, to times when the island was governed by Landowners, Lords and the Clergy (ecclesiastical). The architectural appearance of Teguise is that of another century, it looks like a town anchored between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In 1852 Teguise conceded Capital status in favour of Arrecife hence losing its growth of power obtained from previous centuries. Due to the profound economic crisis this created, there was a general construction paralysis and it thereby maintained its present day aspect as one of the most picturesque areas of the Canary Islands.

A walk through its streets which are steeped in history allows you to learn about the town, its buildings, its people, its cultures and its art and gives you a real insight into Lanzarote and its cultures and traditions.
