San Gabriel’s Castle

San Gabriel’s Castle 1573 a fortress was built on the islet in front of Arrecife by order of Don Agustín de Herrera y Rojas. The interior was all in wood and had a piece of artillery with four pieces, one bronze and three cast iron. In 1586, with the violent attack of Morato Arráez, it was apparent that 40 “feet” for each and only 3 feet high were not enough to contain an invasion from the sea. In 1591 he arrived on the island of Leonardo Torriani, in charge of improving the defenses of the city.

The project consisted in the construction of a stone jetty, bordered by walls on both sides, with three half-flight cannons and escape routes, to connect the fortress to the isle of the Herrera Pier and from there, via a drawbridge, with the nearby beach of Arrecife. Here is the Ponte de las Bolas (unique in the Canaries), characterized by the square-shaped pylons on which the balls bearing the name of the work stand.

Since 1972 the building houses the Archaeological Museum which contains some remains of the early inhabitants of the island. In addition, it has become a perfect point for astronomical observations. The view that is presented today is fantastic: a fort surrounded by the sea and the golden sand, perfect landscape for a photo shoot of many tourists.
